Hi Just wondering - We have re -ordered a new pc *lap top* which was meant to be for Xmas but having found out when we were supposed to get it at a certain date, that there was none in stock and now had to reorder. Having looked at the new packages available for Laptops we have eventually gone for one that is Window's Vista. Can someone tell me if this will be a better option to have in the long run

In the long run it will be better. The hardware will already have the correct drivers for vista with vista being pre-loaded. You will just have to be carefull that any software you want to use is compatable with Vista and that any peripherals you use have drivers for vista. Check with the manufacturers web sites to check for drivers. You should be ok unless your hardware is quite old.

I wouldn'y go round bragging about it too much though Julie. It'll just make people like me insanely jealous. I did a test on all our family computers and mine is the only one that is not Vista ready. I can't understand how I've allowed this to happen, particularly as I have been the head of IT purchasing in the Remaha household for the past 15 years.

I have heard mixed reviews of Vista, so I am holding off on the upgrade on my new pc. You may as well get one with it on though as xphome will not be supported after a while.

I'm going to hang fire on upgrading this computer to Vista, as I've just got it the way I want it (customized desktop etc), although it's more than capable of handling it. Perhaps in a year or so? The other family computer is 5 years old and would be too slow to be worth while upgrading.
I've also got an Apple iBook G4 laptop, and it seems to me that OSX already has most of the features that Microsoft are only now bringing in for Vista.

There is not a version of itunes available that works with Vista so the ipod won't work. Apple's fault not Microsoft. They should have version of there software ready because they have had access to Vista for months. Companies like Canon and Epson seem to have rewritten drivers and software for there peripherals and Vista and Canon are normally bad for driver support so Apple have no excuse.

I ran the Vista upgrade advisor today, and although it doesn't have any problems with my computer, it doesn't recognize the TV card that I've got installed, so obviously the Media Center part of Vista premium wouldn't work with it.
It also said I would need updated drivers for my sound card and some other hardware. Also it didn't like the Nero program that I use for burning DVD/CDs at all.
It also thought it would have some minor issues with the Zone Alarm firewall that I use along with some other software.
No doubt all these issues could be sorted out, and I could always buy a compatible TV card, but it seems like an awful lot of hassle to go through unless a compelling reason for upgrade presents itself.

I dont know what my nephew is doing with his computer, for some reason he turned the security off though he says he didnt and got a virus, i had to go round to see to it,it took a age becouse had to uninstall and re-install norton 2007 and it took a age for some reason,he has xp back on his computer now,but hes blaming me for the problems becouse it was me who give him the vista ...it was more like he took it,that will teach him

You need Nero 7 for Vista.
