It was good to see that Elton managed to turn up to his 60th birthday concert last night (on ITV at 9pm)!
I saw him live twice while he was in his prime and I'd say he's one of the best live performers I've seen. Compared to those days, last night's show was a pretty tame affair.
I sometimes get cross when he changes the melody of his classic hits. To me, there are certain songs that have a magical quality, not just his. It's as though they were waiting to be written. Every note is perfect. It's just a question of someone discovering it.
Well, Elton's written a few of those songs and when he changes the chorus to a song like "Saturday's Alright for Fighting", I wonder what he's up to. The best you can say is that maybe he can't hit all the high notes any more and makes the changes to hide this as much as possible.

I missed that, but I agree with you that some songs should be left as they are. I also think you are right that he cant reach the high notes anymore. I have found memories of dancing to Elton John as a slip of a girl at the church youth club and a certain young man made it all the more memorabile. Methinks we are showing our age Rem.
