While I fundamentally don't agree with execution, I certainly don't mourn Saddams passing. But TBH, Im not entirely sure how I feel about the who sorry situation. Such an almighty mess. Just how many wrongs does it take to make a right anyway?? Unsurprisingly strong views in this thread. Contrasting views! To me this thread could be a microcosm of the world and all that's both right and wrong about it, in moral, political and literal terms. Even while measuring the numbers of dead, we still don't seem completely sated in our thirst for whats right and just. Perhaps understandably, some of us still want more justice, and more punishment to be metred out. Another head or two on the block (even if only figuratively speaking). And so it never ends... I detest politics but its all around us and almost everyone on the planet has an opinion on subjects as fundamental as war, religion, the death penalty, terrorism, the corruption of power... The trouble is, just like Blair, Bush, Saddam and countless others, every single one of us thinks our opinion is the right opinion. As long as their are still people in the world with differing views, there will always be a percentage of them who will feel strongly enough to fight, kill and die for those opinions; and true to form, there will always be those waiting in the wings to capitalise on it all. So we know, there will always be fighting somewhere in the world. Always there will be greed, killing, persecution, suffering and victims. All human nature in its basest and ugliest form. Where to draw the line under the current mess? We could wipe out the whole Bush administration, lock up the whole of Blair's cabinet and execute every terrorist leader we can round up. The fact is, we know that all the and fighting and suffering wouldn't just go away as a result. There's always the next..and the next! Its all a lottery and we're placed somewhere between a rock and a hard place every time we go to the polls. That said, I certainly wouldn't even want to walk a mile in the shoes of any of the major political powers of the world. I can't claim to possess the wisdom of Solomon, so I don't envy the decisions they have to make, not could I live with the devastating consequences of wrong decisions. I don't doubt for a moment that that they face far more complex choices than any of us will ever truly know. Its a constant juggling act, whether those in power are genuine, corrupt or are simply being duped and played for fools. The ongoing tragedy is that we mere mortals have one hell of a lot of growing up to do before we can ever hope to solve the problems that result in wars. I think we all know we're more likely to reach extinction before we ever mature enough to stop fighting completely, whatever the excuses/reasons we find for it. We're all a part of the problem. How do we ever get away from our own human frailties? The answer, very sadly, is that we can't escape ourselves. Thankfully, we all have an equal capacity for good, so some balance is assured. We can but try our best as individuals, to resist joining the blood-lust or following the madding crowd. Reality puts us in the hands of the politicians that we elect; be they good, bad or downright evil. As humans we can mess up when we elect them; and in turn they can mess up once in power. We know they all lie to us, manipulate and hide things from us...what's the solution? Im way to thick to know...you takes your pick! 'Eenie, meanie, miney, moe!' It's scary as feck but there we go!
