How did I manage to miss this thread before!!! In fact whey the heck didn’t I think of it?
Oh my!
I'm such a huge film fan, and there are absolutely way too many for me to list all my favourites. I enjoy such a variety of styles and genres including **coughs** a fair few musicals.
I was a huge Hammer Horror fan from the age of just 5 and as a grown up I still like a good scare. But it doesn’t have to be gory slasher type movies; although gore is sometimes it’s great fun if it’s really OTT. The latest Final Destination film has that effect. I watched it with my 19 year old son and while some people in the audience (including him) were wincing, I was laughing out loud.
Luurve psychological thrillers with a passion (they just don’t make enough really good ones) and I also enjoy a good mystery, but I seem to always figure out the bad guy within moments of his/her appearance. That’s’ bluddy annoying, even if it I do get that smug feeling at the end of the film!
Comedy is great, as is a bit of action, especially if the soundtrack is hot. Drama, yup! Films that make you think or affect you long after you’ve left the cinema are the dogs!!!
Just a few of my personal favourites that instantly come to mind as superb, for a variety of reasons:
The Green Mile – Magnificent book and fantastic movie! If you watch this and fail to be moved then basically you’re already dead!
Shawshank Redemption -
"Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'. That's d**n right." (Morgan Freeman). Triumph over adversity, it gets you every time!
It's a Wonderful Life - Wonderful by name and wonderful by nature! All time classic feel good movie. And yes, I cry every single time!
As Good As It Gets. - Now this is how I like to see Jack Nicholson; humour as dry as a bone. So many fantastic quotes in this film!
"I think of a man and take away all reason and accountability!" [=A woman].
Amelie – Eccentric, touching, funny beautiful and totally heart-warming. Perfect casting of the charming Audry Tatou. Love it, love it, love it. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling every time. **sigh**
Fargo - Quirky, dark, puzzling, witty, clever, compelling, funny.
"And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper." (Marge Gunderson)
Crash (2004) – Superb modern day parable that makes us look beyond the superficial. Politics, class, gender, colour, you name it, this film makes you think twice about the values you previously thought you had. Personally, think it should be made compulsory viewing for kids at GCSE level.
Alien (the original) - My all time favourite true suspense filled horror flick. Awesome! But my favourite 'Alien' quote is actually from the second in the series
"Get away from her you bi@tch!" You betcha Sigourney!
Saving Private Ryan – Come on guys, do I have to say anything? The opening D-Day landing sequence was totally mind-numbing. I don’t think I breathed until it was over. Shocking, horrific, moving and utterly brilliant.
Schindler’s List – ‘Nuff said…
Blade Runner – Ground breaking film of it’s time. Cleverly crafted, with some absolutely stunning cinematography.
“Time to die” Don’t Look Now – Eerie and suspenseful. Scares the begeezers out of you and barely a drop of blood in sight! Never quite looked at a red Mac in the same was since!
The Usual Suspects - Film making at its best. Cast to perfection and perfectly crafted. Sooo clever, so well constructed, so funny and so wonderful to watch once of my all time favourite actors, Kevin Spacey (marry me Kevin) working his incredible magic.
“Who is Kayser Soze?” Cool Hand Luke. –
"What we've got here...is failure to communicate."The Captain (Strother Martin).
“Shakin’ the tree boss…” (Newman). What man could ever for get the car-washing scene. What woman can forget the piercing baby-blues of Paul Newman **swoons** at his ‘mmwah’ kissable best (only surpassed by his sexiest appearance in ‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’ (grrrr…hold me back!)
Dressed to Kill – It may be a little dated now and some of the acting is a little suspect, but this was and still is, a psychological thriller that stands out in my mind even now.
Mystic River – The Unforgiven may be Clint Eastwood’s most memorable directing triumph, but this film is also an absolute must see. So if you haven’t then DO! Moving, tragic and real. It tugs at the heartstrings. A story of the human state and the frailty of life...in my opinion anyway.
Terms of Endearment – Ok, so the guys are probably rolling their eyes at this one. But OMG…does this make me cry like a drain or what!!! OH, and lets not forget that it also has some utterly hilarious moments too, the comic timing of which is magnificent. The after funeral scene has you sobbing uncontrollably and then they go right on and chuck in a rib-cracking funny on top! Boy it proves the point that there’s often a fine line between tears and laughter.
Phew! I could quite easily go on here all day (no I’m not secretly Barry Norman in a dress)…but I won’t ramble any further now. I’ll save some for another day.
Instead I’ll leave you all with a bit of fun to tickle your collective movie memories. See if you can remember which films these quotes belong too…extra points for naming the actors! Some are much easier than other but there’s something to cover peoples differing tastes.
"It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage."
"Houston, we have a problem."
“When I first saw you, I thought you were handsome. Then, of course, you spoke."
“Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya?"
"We all go a little mad sometimes... Haven't you?"
“Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries."
"You know what they call a - a - a Quarter Pounder with cheese in Paris?"
"Did you ever reach a point in your life, where you say to yourself: 'This is the best I'm ever going to look, the best I'm ever going to feel, the best I'm ever going to do,' and it ain't that great?"
"You should be kissed - and often, and by someone who knows how."
"The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true."
"Tell me, why is it every man who seems attractive these days is either married or barred on a technicality?"
"Here's looking at you, kid."Answers on a postcard please folks. I’ be back to hand out the prizes later in the week.
PS My fave quote from Wolfs Creek - "Head on a stick".
I know...it's really sick and it's so twisted but that's why it's so brilliant. Shock humour!
ho hum...
